Welcome to your seventh grade English language arts class and to our team! I am so excited to get to know you all and to have a fantastic time creating a community of learning, fun, and plenty of hard work. I look forward to a wonderful year together.
Course Objectives:
In this class we will be reading, writing, speaking, and listening each day. We will be studying the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for 7th grade English. These standards have been adopted by the state of Oregon and 44 other states. All students should become proficient with these standards.
Classroom Behavioral Expectations:
I expect students to follow these four guidelines when in my classroom.
Grading Scale
87.5-100% = A = 4 = exceeds proficiency
70.00-87.49% = B = 3 = meets proficiency
45.00-69.99% = C = 2 = approaching proficiency
25.00-44.99% = D = 1 = developing proficiency
0-24.99 = F = developing proficiency/incomplete/missing
Do not recycle or digitally trash your work until the end of the quarter. We will often refer back to prior assignments/assessments/notes. Keep all assessments for the entire year.
CRLS:
Although 90% of a student’s grade will be based solely on assessments, the other 10% will be categorized as Life Skills, defined by the Oregon Department of Education under the title Career Related Learning Standards (CRLS). The behavioral factors in this category are crucial to your success in this class. The things that you do everyday establish the habits necessary for success both in and out of the classroom. Here are the primary components of this category.
Punctuality: Showing up prepared and on time is one of the most important skills you can learn in life.
Teamwork: Demonstrate respect and flexibility in team situations. Choosing a positive and cooperative attitude is vital to your success in this class and in the future.
Personal Management and Problem Solving: Take initiative to complete work in a responsible manner. Use interpersonal communication skills to receive verbal and nonverbal messages, recognizing personal and cultural differences.
Skills Practice: Daily work
The CRLS will be graded on a 4-point scale similar to the one above. The students will be self-evaluating this portion of their grade with input from me on a quarterly basis.
Attendance:
Regular attendance is required. Class time cannot be duplicated when you are absent. Please try to schedule appointments and family vacations outside of school time. You are not penalized for work missed due to an EXCUSED absence. Students receive one make up day for each EXCUSED day missed. The school policy is defined as, "According to ORS 339.965, excused absences include: personal illness, family illness and business, emergencies, funerals, suspensions. Absences for reasons which do NOT fall into the above categories will be unexcused." When you are absent and need to make up work, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check the online calendar for any missed assignments. You will need to make arrangements before school, at lunch, or after school to make up any quizzes. For extended absences consisting of 3 or more days, parents are able to request homework from the school.
Communication:
Communication between home and school is absolutely essential for optimizing student success. Email is the best way to reach me. I will make every effort to get back in a timely manner, however daily planning time is often used to meet with other teachers to collaborate. If there is a question concerning an assignment, an assessment, or a particular grade, I expect the student to talk with me first, either in person or via school email.
I am excited to learn with you this year!
